Welcome To U-Space

U-Space is a collaborative effort between Brad Ranola and Cary Hitsman of Anacapa ʻUkulele, Blues-ʻUkulele artist and educator, Jason Arimoto, Six-time grammy award-winner, Daniel Ho, and the Japanese American Cultural Community Center (JACCC). U-Space is a coffee shop, a music school (with a heavy emphasis on ʻUkulele), and a retail ʻUkulele store all in one location. U-Space is focused on building community through music and ʻUkulele.

Located in the heart of the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles in the JACCC building, U-Space overlooks the historic, one-acre, Isamu Noguchi plaza. The JACCC campus also boasts meeting rooms, art galleries, the 860-seat Aratani Theater, and the James Irvine Japanese Garden. All of this will serve as the backdrop for the inaugural Los Angeles ʻUkulele Expo on June 28, 2014.

Leslie Ito, CEO of the JACCC, and her board share our vision of activating community through ‘Ukulele. We have partnered on philanthropic programs such as, ‘Ukuleles for Little Tokyo. This project will provide instruments and musical instruction to underserved areas of Southern California.

Hula space

One of the earliest uses of the ‘Ukulele was to accompany Hula. We have on staff one of the most highly regarded Kumu Hula in Southern CA. The ‘Ukuleles adorning the walls of U-Space provide the perfect backdrop for learning Hula and how it visualizes the story behind the music.

Cafe space

U-Space is a café. We are equally as passionate about coffee as we are music. Our beans are sourced from a small roasting team called Beacon Coffee. Beacon visits every country and farm that they source coffee from and roast it to perfection in Ventura, CA. We pickup our freshly roasted orders from Beacon twice a week to ensure our coffee and espresso drinks are the freshest they can be. Our focus is on traditional coffee drinks made in the best possible manner.

U-Space cultivates community. Bringing people together through music and coffee is our mission. While watching a performance is enjoyable, participating in that art form is life-enriching. As partners with JACCC we are implementing programs that provide instruments and classes for underserved communities.
